There is no escape…….

The lok pal bill mostly targets the politicians and government servants. What about the bribe one has to pay to get the basic things. To get gas connection one has to bribe the auto driver who delivers the gas to the house. My friend paid Rs.8000/- for a connection which would have cost him Rs.6000 if he had gone in a queue (this is in the private sector) and he would have got the connection in 3 months times.

Daughter was not well and was visiting the pediatrician  almost everyday and everyday his attendant was charging Rs.100/- when I asked her she says it is compulsory to pay everyday Rs.100/- for doctor consultation.I am sure no doctor will charge Rs.100 from the patient everyday. The rule what doctors here follow is the patient pays Rs.150 to doctor and can go to doctor for a week without paying. It made me sick when she asked me money when I was in hurry to take my daughter to get admitted in the hospital.Luckily the children hospital where I admitted her was not that commercial compared to what we see in the corporate hospital.

Here in summer we used to get power cuts for 2 hours everyday. But if you have a function at home just pay the line men some amount that day entire area won’t have power cut.We used to pray for some functions/parties in my area.

Because of summer we are having water shortages. We have to book for a water tank and it is delivered on the first come first serve basis but if we bribe the driver Rs.100/- he gets it immediately after the booking.

To replace a gas cylinder we have to call and book it.Then they give a time of 15 days to get a full cylinder. The cylinder is given within 10 days to the auto driver but he sells it to the hotels at a Rs.800 when the cost of one cylinder is Rs.350.00.

Once a traffic police caught us and asked us to show the papers, the person who was driving the car showed him all the papers which were required and the policemen was quite upset on seeing all the correct papers. He was desperate to catch us and he asked us to show the insurance document. And the renewal of the vehicle insurance was due that month end and there was enough time for the renewal. But policemen started arguing and asking questions why we didn’t renew it.The thing is he wanted some money from us and we were not ready to pay him.

Most of the traffic signals has cameras to monitor the traffic as well as the policemen who take bribes. But our police personnel are quite smart they go into the bylanes to catch people and take bribe from them.

Even temple priest are bribed so that he utters our name when doing pujas.

Today The Times of India has an article on corruption in rural areas.Rural households paid Rs.470 cr bribe for basic services.

“Rural people pay Rs.1-2 get a family member examined as an out-patient,mostly to get the OPD cards and Rs.900/- to avail diagnostic services such as X-ray,blood or urine tests at a government hospital”.

“To get an application form for ration card one has to pay Rs.5/-.”

“”Rs.700-800 to get scholarship or admission in schools.”

The thing I wanted to say is for survival one can’t escape bribing the corrupt people,he can be government servant or non government. There is no end……

  1. What you are saying is right – The corruption at the highest level is just the tip of the iceberg. There is more corruption among the people which, no wonder, makes them elect similar leaders. So, basically, we are all corrupt!

Thats what i wanted to convey that lok bill will take care of bigger scams and corruption but what about the small bribes which has to be paid to live….

The Financial meltdown in the United States (and the bankruptcy of big banks, etc) is a case of official corruption. People (mostly MBA’s) were paid bonuses and incentives for brokering certain financial deals that destroyed their own institutions. Strictly looking, it was sort of legal. But still it was corruption, because they got (undeserved) incentives for their disastrous policies. So, corruption can happen officially as well!

Money, is a ruthless master. Ruthless enough that people can never be satisfied/ happy enough with any amount of money they can have. People who are corrupt often don’t know that they are getting into a vicious circle of addiction.

Sometimes i wonder what they will do with that money, how many of their next generation will eat that money and for how many years the money will last….

Whoever has designed this system of intelligent life on earth is a master manipulator – But I still love the sense of eternal justice in it. Sorry to deviate so much from the main topic! 🙂

No you didn’t deviate from the topic and i got to know something new from ur comment with reg to corruption in US

    Destination Infinity

  2. So very true. Thats why when I wrote I said things will not change and I got a bit if flak for it. As I wrote in my article we need to get together and take back our street our road locality city and the nation.

Even i think it won’t change but it will reduce for sure at the higher levels.

You have mentioned the right things even if lokpall bill gets passed what then , what are we expecting to change pwople like pawar or laloo parsad or badals in punjab will get arrested or what NO WAY that will never happen no matter what.

Even if they are punished they will appeal in a higher court like Shiney Ahuja and will be on bail forever…..

People get asked for bribe right from street level to national level and lets not forget we still vote for people who w know are corrupt.

I totally agree with you but one thing might work when the bill is passed you watch these gas men ,line men, etc wil surly be taken to task cause the govt wil havw to show its doing someting abou the bill and we will go all happy and then come elections we will vote for them again.

I hope these gas men, line men etc stop taking bribe but what about the docs and other services without which we can’t survive and we end up paying them more than what they deserve….

  3. I would say lokpal bil is just a small step in direction of bigger change..Its not easy to stop corruption at root level…When ppl at higher grade will be at stake and fear from accepting any bribe etc..they may put pressure on subordinates/juniors

I hope they put pressure on the people to stop taking bribe,i feel bad for the people who are very poor end up paying bribe…

  4. We are so used to bribing now at the ration office, telephones and for gas connection that we don’t think of it as bribing at all! If we don’t do it, we won’t get the work done, simple!

Yes thats what i said we can’t escape bribing to get the basic services

The doctors don’t even bother to think that they are treating a child. Our doctor is too smart. After visiting him, if we have got some doubt about some medicine and call him, he asks us to come in person and then charge again!

    Yeah even it is same

Where do they get the power from, if they get some extra money?!

Policemen anywhere in our country don’t get any respect, I feel! All are same!

To stop the policemen from taking bribe state government has kept cameras at the traffic signals but as i said they go into bylanes to catch people

Yes, Saritha, there is no other go, we have to go with the trend!

    Nice post, Saritha!

    Thanks Sandhya

  5. Oh yeah Sari….if we refuse to pay that bribe, those money-hungry officials make sure that our papers dont get passed at any cost….then what to do ??? So many of the public are forced to pay to lead a normal daily life.

Now, u see, the politicians are trying their level best that the lokpal bill shld not come – they are being their meanest to avoid it….so, what do we do now ???

Thats what there is so escape, even if we get lokpal bill the corruption at higher levels are stopped but to get the common service we have to pay, there is so escape.

  6. Every country deserves the leaders (government) it gets. We get corrupt leaders because we elect them there in first place…and because we ourselves are corrupt.

But then…how do we eradicate this problem? Where do we tackle it from? The top later or the bottom?

    1. what I meant was – this bill is a small step to tackle the bigger problem.
The fight is very difficult, because if one doesn’t pay the bribe, the work isn’t done!!
And they make us run around from pillar to pillar!!
